With so many ways to use your checking account—like checks, debit card purchases, ACH transactions—it can be a little tricky to keep track of your transactions. Some show up almost right away, like debit card purchases. Others, like personal checks, get processed overnight. Here’s what to expect for the typical posting order:
Fees happen. But they don’t always have to. Like with the Truist One Checking or Truist Confidence Account—where there’s no overdraft or overdraft related fees.
Overdraft fees happen when you spend more than you have in your checking account—but you won’t get any with a Truist One Checking or Truist Confidence Account
A $36 fee that’s charged when a transaction amount is more than your available balance and is paid with negative funds. If the original transaction amount is less than $5, we will not charge an overdraft fee.
Truist pays overdrafts at its discretion, which means that we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined or returned.
Unless you have overdraft protection, overdraft fees can be issued up to three times per day until you make a deposit to cover all outstanding transactions.
Overdraft fees may be assessed on checks, recurring debit card transactions, and ACH items. Also, if you have accepted overdraft coverage, ATM and one-time debit card transactions may generate overdraft fees. To review the Truist Overdraft Decision Notice, please refer to the last page of the Personal Deposit Accounts Fee Schedule (PDF).
Everyone makes mistakes—we get that. So, there are a few exceptions to overdraft fees, such as:
Transactions | Transaction amount | Available balance | Overdraft fee |
---|---|---|---|
Available balance | — | $2.00 | — |
Coffee purchase, debit card | $3.00 | -$1.00 | No |
Lunch purchase, debit card | $4.00 | -$5.00 | No |
Check 102 | $87.00 | -$92.00 | Yes |
Check 104 | $4.00 | -$96.00 | No |
You don’t want to pay fees. We get that. Here are a few tools to help you keep an eye on your balance and quickly fix any accidental overdrafts.
The best way to avoid account fees—like monthly maintenance fees—is to start with the right checking account or savings account for you. If you’ve done that, there are still a few others fees you should know about.
There is no charge for paper statements or paperless online statements. Use this step-by-step guide to enroll in paperless statements.
You can use more than 3k Truist ATMs for free. And some checking accounts will waive fees a few times a month if you use a non-Truist ATM.
If you need to stop a transaction before it's complete, like a check you've written, a pending ACH transaction, or even a Zelle ® transfer, a $35 fee will be issued.
Component ID : "accordionGridLayout-464338858"Disclosure 1 “Banking Day” means any business day on which the Bank is open to the public for carrying on substantially all of its banking functions at a majority of its branches located within that state. If we receive an item on a weekend or holiday, the item is deemed to have been received on our next business day. Our business days and hours are posted at our branches and ATM hours are displayed on the ATM deposit screen and are subject to change from time to time at our discretion. Inclement weather, natural disasters, computer, or electronic failures may also affect the banking day and business hours.
Disclosure 2 Generally, checks deposited with standard availability and received by the 9:00 PM ET cut-off time on banking days will be available the next day. In some circumstances, Truist does place holds on deposits which delays when those funds will be available. Checks deposited with immediate availability will be processed each banking day (Monday through Friday except federal holidays) during nightly processing. If accepted, your available balance will be increased by the amount of the deposited check, minus the applicable fee, at the time the deposit is made. Currently available for Mobile Check Deposits only. We encourage you to monitor your account and available balance through Online Banking and Mobile Banking.
